Dr. Rippei Hayashi completed a PhD with Dr. Takuya Ueda in Tokyo University in 2007, studying the nuclear transport mechanism of the mammalian transcription factor NRF2. He moved to the UK for a postdoc to join David Ish-Horowicz’s group to study RNA localisation during ovarian axis formation in Drosophila. Through a genetic screen, he identified a number of genes in the piRNA pathway, the central mechanism of transposon defence in animals, as key regulator of RNA localisation and axis determination. This finding urged him to join the Julius Brennecke lab in 2013 to pursue his interests in the piRNA pathway.

He moved to the Australian National University in 2018 to have his own group. His main focus since his time in the Brennecke lab is to understand the mechanism by which the piRNA precursor RNA is selected and processed.

In the talk, he will be presenting his recent findings on the diversification of the piRNA biogenesis mechanism in Drosophila. He will also be discussing how transposons may drive the evolution of piRNA pathway in Drosophila as well as in other Dipteran species.

We will be having a 'meet the speaker' session after the talk. Tea and some sweets will be served. Dr. Hayash has an international career path as you can see in his resume below: he experienced post-docs in UK and Austria, and got a PI job in Australia. Anyone interested in finding how he made it is welcome to join us!

セミナー後の懇談会は日本語でも歓迎です。
