2023.3.6 Misc. Lectures given by Prof. KURAHASHI Takashi and Assoc. Prof. TAKEUCHI Hiroko at the International Collaborative Research Fair (ICRF) hosted by Ritsumeikan High School

On January 28th, Prof. KURAHASHI Takashi and Assoc. Prof. TAKEUCHI Hiroko gave lectures and commented on research presentations at the International Collaborative Research Fair (ICRF) hosted by Ritsumeikan Senior High School in Kyoto. The ICRF is an international collaborative research project presentation assembly where high schools in Japan conduct joint research with high schools overseas as part of the Super Science High School (SSH) pioneering reform initiative. This year, 17 Japanese schools and 16 overseas schools participated, and presentations on 17 themes of international joint research projects were given online (Zoom), all in English.
Prof. KURAHASHI and Assoc. Prof. TAKEUCHI gave a lecture about what a scientific paper is and how to present new findings using examples from past papers and findings as well as new findings from their lab. They also said that they hoped high school students in Japan and abroad who are interested in research will learn more about scientific approaches and enjoy science. Following their lectures, the two professors served as commentators in different group sessions in collaboration with teachers from overseas high schools, answering questions and providing advice for international joint research presentations, as if they were presentations at an actual international academic conference.
Students gave presentations based on fundamental research results gathered from their particular interests and covered a wide range of topics, including sensory physiology, astronomy, botany, microbiology, environmental studies, and medicine. The professors stated that the event was a valuable and stimulating opportunity for them to experience the genuine inquisitive nature of high school students regarding their own thoughts on the scientific process of creating things that had never existed before, dealing with SDGs, and raising issues related to modern society.
