2020.10.1 Misc. The Osaka University/Nikon Imaging Center held its opening ceremony on 1 October 2020

National Corporation Osaka University and the Nikon corporation opened the Osaka University/Nikon Imaging Center (director: Dr. ISHII Masaru, professor of the Graduate school of Frontier Biosciences, Graduate School of Medicine and the Institute for Open, Transdisciplinary Research Initiatives [OTRI] and Immunology Frontier Research Center [IFReC]) on 1 October 2020 to be a place of community and support for research on cutting-edge optical microscopes. The Osaka University Nikon Imaging Center is the 10th center to be established.

With Nikon Imaging Centers (NICs) already having been established in internationally acclaimed research institutes around the world, including centers in Harvard University and the University of California, San Diego (USA); King's College London (the UK), Heidelberg University (Germany), the Institut Curie (France), and the Singapore Bioimaging Consortium (Singapore), partnership with Nikon allows images to be acquired, processed, and analyzed using the latest state-of-the-art microscopes. In this global vein, NICs serve as international hubs for mutual exchange by holding the Nikon Imaging Center Director's Meeting each year, where discussions on microscopic imaging and reports on the activities and results of each NIC facility can be addressed.

The NIC at Osaka University will be a first for Nikon, as the advanced technology at its facilities will focus on capturing minute cell structures as well as emphasize in vivo imaging for life phenomena in a living body in real time. In addition to having access to equipment installed with the latest software, such as Nikon's multiphoton, super-resolution, and confocal microscopes; and cell-culture observation devices, the center's promotion of training programs aimed at improving image analysis technology and joint research will be widely open to researchers outside the university (including companies) with the expectation that the center will become not only a nationwide, but also a worldwide base for imaging research.

Remote microscope operation and user seminars are planned to be held online beginning in November 2020.
