Dynamics of Collagen Fibers Supporting Fish Fin Morphogenesis
Collagen is the most abundant protein in the body, and its importance is widely recognized in medicine and beauty. However, many aspects of its "dynamics" during organogenesis and tissue growth remain unclear. We have focused on actinotrichia, collagen fiber structures that are regularly aligned at the tips of fish fins, and through live imaging using a collagen-specific fluorescent probe, we have uncovered various previously unknown dynamics, such as "migration," "anisotropic growth," and "selective degradation."
Fluorescence Imaging of Collagen Fibers in Zebrafish Live Tissue
We have been advancing the development of fluorescent labeling of collagen fibers in live tissues, particularly during bone morphogenesis of zebrafish. By using cell-specific promoters to label collagen molecules with various fluorescent proteins, we have established a system to track dynamic changes in collagen fibers during the growth of living organisms. Additionally, by visualizing the dynamics of collagen fibers labeled with different fluorescent colors in 3D, we successfully discovered previously unreported fine structures in bone.
