Abstract

I am Yoon, 2nd-year master’s student at Graduate School of Agricultural Science, Tohoku University. It is a pleasure that I can share my research on genetic engineering in marine bivalves with you, with emphasis on the recent discovery of a viral promoter highly active in molluscan cells. In the seminar, I would also like to share my personal experience in applying to PhD programs in U.S. graduate schools, in Biology and Bioengineering disciplines. I hope you find this information helpful, and I cannot be more excited to see you all.

Profile

I entered Tohoku University as an Applied Marine Biology course student, part of the Global 30 program and joined the current lab in 2020 which focuses on aquatic molluscan physiology. Since the graduation in Sep. 2021, I am continuing my study in the same lab as a master’s student. My research on the discovery of strong viral promoter in molluscan cells was published in PNAS in Nov. 2022. Having applied to several U.S. graduate schools, I was accepted in Caltech (Biology), Yale (MCGD) and Stanford (Bioengineering), and decided to go to Stanford for 2023 Fall entrance.
