Rhythms in motion, rhythms in brain
Our behavior encompasses many continuous and repetitive movements, exemplified by those used in running, speech and playing musical instruments. Such rhythmic behaviors consist of many individual actions and often become rhythmic. Here, there is a main question: how such actions are shaped into rhythms? In order to address this question we have developed a running wheel system, Step-Wheel, which can control stepping of mice, and found that the interval and phase of steps were controlled in Step-Wheel running. I would like to discuss the neural basis of the interval/phase control according to our recording from the striatum of running mice. Also, I will mention the similarity between such movement control and brain waves, whose phase synchronization is involved in information coding of the brain.
