Structure of the tripartite efflux pump MexAB-OprM spanning two membranes

Tripartite efflux pumps play a major role in multidrug resistance in Gram-negative bacteria. The MexAB-OprM efflux pump, which is constitutively expressed, contributes to intrinsic resistance of Pseudomonas aeruginosa to various antimicrobials. Recently, we determined the whole structure of MexAB-OprM. In this colloquium, I will present the suggested mechanisms for complex formation and drug efflux on the basis of the structure.
