Tim Clausen is a structural biologist and a senior scientist at the Research Institute of Molecular Pathology (IMP) in Vienna, Austria. He studies the protein quality control system that cells evolved, and through which molecular chaperones and proteases monitor the functionality of each protein, thereby reducing the amount of misfolded molecules that may undergo dangerous interactions. Recently, his lab has made major contributions to various aspects of proteins quality control such as BacPROTAC (2022 Cell, 2023 Cell), which is a PROTAC system in bacteria, as well as structural understanding of gigantic enzymes involved in ubiquitination (2025 Cell, 2025 Science, 2023 Science).
