Metal Ion Dynamics Imaging using a Surface Plasmon Resonance Microscope

Metal ions have fundamental roles as regulators of various cellular biodynamics. For example, potassium ion controls the membrane potential of cardiomyocytes and neurons to a resting membrane potential by effluxing from the inside of the cell when the membrane potential is rapidly increased by external stimuli. Imaging of metal ion concentrations dynamics will lead to a deeper understanding of biological functions and the investigation of diseases caused by channel defects in cells. In this presentation, I will introduce a method to observe the dynamics of metal ion concentration by surface plasmon microscopic imaging using metal ion ionophores.
