Mechanism of HP1-mediated heterochromatin formation in mammalian cells
Histone H3 lysine 9 (H3K9) methylation is an epigenetic mark for transcriptionally repressed chromatin. Previous studies revealed that H3K9 methylation is not statically but dynamically regulated during mammalian development. However, this molecular mechanism remains unclear. We recently found that H3K9 methylation binding protein HP1 is essential for maintaining H3K9 methylation. In this seminar, I would like to introduce the mechanism of heterochromatin formation in mammalian cells.
