How are chromosomes inherited to the next generation during cell division?
All the genetic information (genome) of living organisms is packed into structures called chromosomes, which are inherited to the next generation of cells. Therefore, the correct inheritance of chromosomes is essential for the maintenance of life. It is also known that problems in chromosome inheritance can cause abnormalities in chromosome structure, leading to many diseases, including cancer. Therefore, we would like to elucidate the mechanism of "how chromosomes are inherited to the next generation?
What we aim to achieve in our lab
We are focusing on chromosome segregation in chromosome inheritance. In particular, we focus on the function and structure of centromeres and kinetochores formed on chromosomes and aim to elucidate the molecular mechanism of accurate chromosome segregation
Elucidating how chromosomes are accurately segregated to the next generation of cells will lead to an understanding of the basic principles that sustain life and contribute to the elucidation of the pathogenic mechanisms of diseases caused by chromosome aberrations and to drug discovery.
