The 2015 Young Researchers Retreat (YRR) is a chance to share your knowledge and discuss the possibility of novel interdisciplinary research with other graduate students and young researchers. We will hold a poster session, focused group discussions, special lectures, and an excursion. We plan to provide the opportunity to not only improve your knowledge of other researchers’ studies but also improve your ability to express ideas and communicate with people from different fields. Finally, there will be the opportunity to enjoy traditional events, and places in Japan.

In this retreat, we invite more than 10 graduate student from foreign country’s universities, so we use English all 3 days, therefore FBS students from foreign county don’t need to be afraid about language and it’s very good opportunity for you to make friend of Japanese and foreign university graduate student.

We ask each participant to prepare a poster (details below) outlining their own research or a topic that interests them. The purpose of this session is to share and discuss your research with people from different fields (e.g., biological science, informatics, and engineering).

The presenter should make their talk easy to understand for scientists in different fields, and focus on the fundamental significance of their work (or area of interest). See also Applicant’s preparation.

In the group discussion session, we will divide participants into several groups with members from diverse backgrounds to discuss ideas for interdisciplinary research. These ideas will be presented on the final day of the retreat. It is hoped that the discussion will lead to new experiences, new ways of thinking, and innovative ideas.

We have organized special lectures by experts from interdisciplinary studies and will speak about their research and the essence of interdisciplinary study. We hope this lecture will be the catalyst that leads you to try interdisciplinary study and contribute to society by your research.

We hope to increase our understanding between scientific fields but also across cultural borders.

Time table
  • Please prepare two posters (A0 and A4 size). It is OK to use same poster.
  • A0 is for poster tour, A4 is for group discussion.
  • A0 size: Horizontal 841mm × Vertical 1189mm. Print out of slides (i.e., multiple A4) is also OK. As a general rule please prepare the poster in English.
  • Please prepare a poster that can be easily understood by researchers outside your own field.
  • If possible, it would be advantageous to bring your own computer.
