Our world is full of problems, such as energy, environments and ethnic conflicts, and our future is far from secured. We, as scientists, need to give serious thoughts to come up with many good ideas and technologies to solve them, but that is not an easy task and is probably not possible if you confine your research within a narrow and specific field and expertise.

The purpose of this Young Researchers Summer Retreat is to provide our students and young research staffs with an opportunity to freely mix with one another and discuss their present studies and future research goals in a relaxed atmosphere away from their laboratories and supervisors in order to stimulate interdisciplinary research activities by student initiative. This is the 10th year of the Retreat and the eighth year that we invite graduate students and young researchers from foreign institutes to participate. Every year our young guests enjoy close communications with others with different scientific and cultural backgrounds. We hope that this will further stimulate new research ideas and collaborations.

The venue is a KKR Hotel Kuni-so, located in the heart of Kyoto with Kamo river running aside, where it offers many local attractions within a short distance, including the Imperial Palace, Heian Jingu, Simogamo Shrine, Ginkaku Temple, etc. It is all yours to make this opportunity a wonderful experience. Please come join our students and postdocs and fully enjoy yourselves.

On behalf of the Organizing Committee, it is our great pleasure for us to host you to the 10th Young Researchers’ Retreat (YRR) to be held from July 13-15 2016 in Kyoto, Japan. We are very pleased to declare a hearty welcome to this special event in the 10th anniversary year.

The purpose of the YRR is to promote research communication and collaboration for graduate students among cross-disciplinary fields.

The 10th YRR theme is

“Link People, Link Ideas”

There are a lot of people having unique backgrounds in the world. The YRR will provide you with great opportunities and fresh experiences to see new cultures. We hope that you would find various links of your ideas with other participants’ in this retreat, and it would lead you to link your heart with others. You might get wonderful, innovative and inspiring research ideas through fortuitous encounters with participants.

Kyoto, the meeting venue, is the Japanese ancient capital city and it had been the centre of Japanese power for a long time. You will stay a stone's throw away from a variety of historic places where many dramatic events occurred, such as the Kyoto Imperial Palace, the Shimogamo Shrine and the Nijoh Castle.

We look forward to seeing you in Kyoto. Please enjoy your new adventure and have a wonderful experience!
