Small Group Discussion - Research Projects of Participants
20 min presentation by each member to his/her own group
introducing his/her research. Time includes questions and answers.
There is no format for the style of the presentation.
Slides, posters or any handouts are welcome as far as they in English.

Small Group Discussion on Specific Themes
Specific themes for discussion will be given to individual
groups, and
the outcome of discussion will be presented later at a plenary session
by each.
Rule: Small groups consisting of members from different scientific backgrounds will be given a research subject to resolve. A representative from each group will give a presentation summarizing the group’s strategies. A prize will be awarded to the best group as judged by peers.
Members: about 6 people per group. (Refer to participants list)
Place: Yoko no ma
Presentation time: About 5 minutes + an additional 5 minutes for questions. Because of time constraints, we intend to be strict with regards to these limits.
Presentation form: Oral presentation.
A PC with Power Point will be available. All presentations will be in English, although discussion may be done in Japanese.
Judgment way: Peers will judge each group by awarding a score
from a
low of 1 to a high of 10 based on the following three parameters:
feasibility, cleverness, and ability to integrate different fields of
study. The team with the highest score will be awarded the prize.
Participants
All D1-D5 Students, PostDocs and Assistant Professors belonging to the FBS or working in a lab
that belongs to the FBS along with invitees from foreign institutes.
* Members receiving FBS salaries are expected to participate.
Allothers are greatly encouraged to join.
* Questions regarding eligibility should be sent to
arkw@fbs.osaka-u.ac.jp .
Participation Fees
The retreat will cost 21000 yen(*) and should be paid the
first day.
* Part of this will be reimbursed later.
* Some may also have to pay for accident insurance.
This will not be reimbursed.
Students who have enrolled in the
“Personal Accident Health Insurance for Students Pursuing Education and
Research”
upon matriculating will not need this insurance
Participation Fees
The deadline for submission is July 03, 2009 (Fri.) 17:00.
The entry form is attached with the announcement e-mail of this retreat.
Please send forms to arkw@fbs.osaka-u.ac.jp and
make the Subject of the e-mail “entry for GCOE retreat”.
* Cancellation is not permitted.
* Anyone who wants to join for only a portion of the retreat
is asked to explain on the entry form.
* Even if you are unsure whether you can participate,
please submit the form by the deadline.
