学生海外活動支援プログラム

平成25年度「卓越した大学院拠点形成支援補助金」の支援による、海外における学会発表等を行った学生たちの活動レポートです。どの学生もポスターや口頭での発表にとどまらず、多くの海外の学生や研究者と熱のこもったディスカッションを行うことができました。この貴重な経験は、きっと今後の研究生活や考え方に大いに役立つでしょう。

I attended neuroscience 2013, the 43rd annual meeting of Society for Neuroscience held in San Diego, from 9 to 13 November 2013. I gave my poster presentation entitled "Phase-domain analysis of motion selectivity in V1 neurons" on the third day of the meeting. Even though a nano symposium for visual neuroscience was simultaneously held in another room, many researchers came to my poster. My English skill was not so good and sometimes my explanation might have no means but finally I had explained about my study and they gave me some valuable comments. I felt nervous when some very famous people came but I was really glad that they were very gentle and gave me comments that my study, especially analyzing method was interesting.

This annual meeting is one of the largest international conferences for neuroscience where more than 15,000 studies were presented and nearly 600 exhibitors showcased. There were so many interesting studies that I could not sadly see the all studies I had planed. One of the most interesting studies was presented by L Liu. They revealed receptive filed structures of V2 neurons with computational approaches (projection pursuit regression). I think their approach can be used in our study and will improve our study. And Studies by Alonso Lab were also very impressive for me. They recorded neuronal responses with multiple microelectrode probes. Many researchers and I are also using same electrode. We mainly insert the electrode perpendicularly to brain surface because the electrode is very fragile, but they inserted tangentially. I asked them whether electrodes had been damaged or not and their answer was no. This information helps us because the constraint of electrode orientation has been removed.

I also visited many exhibitors. Recently devices for recording from multiple neurons are developed. Neuronexus displayed a new electrode that has 3 dimensional recording sites and TDT displayed a 384 channels multi electrode array and a new order system with that user can easily customize electrode design and order. Even though these devices are very exciting, they require new expensive devices. I wish I could do experiment with these devices.

After Neuroscience 2013 I went to University of California, Berkeley because festschrift for Ralph Freeman was held at University of California in 14 November 2013. In the festschrift many famous people talked. I had thought they mainly talk about their relationship with Dr. Freeman, but most of their talks are about their recent studies. It is true that I was disappointed a little because probably I would not have opportunities for listening their relationship, but their studies were very interesting.

After festschrift Dr. Shinji Nishimoto who is ex-member of Ohzawa Lab and Gallant Lab took others and me to Gallant Laboratory. Their experiment room is in the other building so I could see only student and staff room. But this was first time for me to see student room and I felt happy.

I think these experiences improved me in many aspects. Finally, I appreciate the financial support from this program that let me attend the meeting and go UC Berkeley. This was very useful experiment for me.
