(Title) Report on the 54th annual Biophysical Society Meeting and the visit to Ron Vale Lab.
(Name) Shugo Nishiyama
(Laboratry) Soft Biosystem Laboratry (Prof.Yanagida)
(Destination) Moscone center, San Francisco, California, USA and University of California San Francisco, California, USA
(Purpose) To have poster presentation at the Biophysical Society 54th Annual Meeting (2/20-2/24) at Moscone center and visit Ron Vale Lab.
(Result) I attended the Biophysical Society 54th annual meeting, held during February 20th to 24th, 2010 at Moscone center, San Francisco, California. Many biophysicists around the world gathered at this meeting. Therefore, I had discussion with many researchers. The discussion with the researchers not only Japanese also foreigners was very fruitful.
In the annual meeting, I presented a poster titled as "The effect of the interaction between the myosin-X FERM domain and integrin on filopodia protrusion". It is said that myosin-X FERM domain and integrin (substrate coating) are involved in the filopodia protrusion, but the mechanism involved is still unclear. In this poster presentation, we particularly showed that the speed of filopodia elongation is related to substrate coating which included integrin or not. I discussed about my result with researchers who familiar with myosin-X. Then they gave me an information to improve my research.
I also visited Prof. Ron Vale Lab at University of California San Francisco for discussing with the members of Ron Vale Lab. They gave us the presentation of their research progress. They studied about T-cell and cytoskeleton with optical techniques. After their presentation, we discussed about each research. The discussion motivated me to study english, since my english is too poor to smoothly communicate with the members of Prof. Ron Vale Lab.
This was the first time for me to discuss abroad, and the experience was very meaningful and valuable.
Finally, I greatly appreciate everyone who helped me, especially the members of Prof. Ron Vale Lab, and GCOE program for the financial supports and providing opportunity to attend the conference and visit to Ron Vale Lab.
