I visited the capital of Denmark, Copenhagen, to attend the 10th Annual European Congress of Rheumatology, which had being held on 10-13 June 2009. There were more than 13,000 participants from all over the world in this year. The majority was from Europe and there were many attendees from USA, North America and Asia too. The EULAR Congress is primarily a platform for the exchange of scientific and clinical information as well as being a forum for interaction among patients, physicians, scientists, and health professionals etc. The EULAR 2009 Congress in Copenhagen covered a wide range of topics on clinical innovations, clinical translational research and basic science. Poster presentation with the possibility to talk to investigators was the heart of the congress in this year. We could also attend the sponsored satellite symposia that were scheduled during each morning and late afternoon.
As I am doing basic research on autoimmune diseases, I chose to attend the basic and translational science sessions, for example "Have autoantigenic targets taught us anything about autoimmune disease pathogenesis? ", "New insights into antigen presentation: Towards innovative immunotherapy", and "MicroRNAs in innate and adaptive immunity". Through those sessions, I learnt about the latest progressions of research on autoimmune diseases which can be useful for my own research in the future. Besides, I also attended the satellite symposia entitled "Breaking the Barriers - between clinical trials and clinical practice in RA -" and "Optimizing the Management of Osteoarthritis: Emerging Therapies". I had learnt much more about the progression of the present treatments and also gotten new insights in the development and design of novel classes of therapeutics for the autoimmune diseases.
I had my poster presentation entitled "Tumor Necrosis Factor (TNF) Emerged as a Dominant Cytokine in Peripheral Blood Immunoregulatory Network of Lupus Nephritis Patient after Treatment" on the second day of the congress. I have the paper, which entitled "Interactions among type I and type II interferon, tumor necrosis factor, and β-estradiol in the regulation of immune response-related gene expressions in systemic lupus erythematosus", be published in January and this presentation is the extension of the paper. With the experience of presentation in last year at the same congress and also the other conferences, I was able to present my results much more confidently. Several researchers doing similar works showed their interests in my work. I feel myself further understanding my own work through explaining and doing discussions with them. I have received some comments from other senior scientists. I will try to improve my experiment in the future.
I have met many familiar faces at EULAR 2009 congress. I enjoyed meeting and recognizing a lot of doctors and researchers from all over the world especially from South-East Asia. I believe that all I have learnt through this congress will definitely benefit my research work in the future. I greatly appreciate GCOE and my professor for the financial supports and providing this chance to widen my insight and network of friends in the same field.
